Five in Five Series - Key Questions Clients Have About Couples Therapy (Part 1)
Franco Greco answers key questions clients ask about couple's therapy
This is the first in my Five in Five - Key Client Questions About Therapy.
Today I am responding to key client questions about Couples Therapy.
What is couples therapy?
Couples therapy gives you and your partner a safe, structured space to understand what is happening in your relationship and to change the patterns that keep you stuck. Many couples come to therapy when arguments keep repeating, when they feel distant or disconnected, after a breach of trust, or when a big life change such as a new baby, a move or a career shift puts pressure on the relationship.
What happens in the first session?
In the first session we talk about what has brought you to therapy, what each of you would like to be different, and the history of your relationship. From there we agree on goals and a plan. Sessions are a place for both partners to be heard. My role is not to take sides but to help you both understand each other and communicate more effectively.
How I work with couples
I draw on the Gottman Method and schema therapy. The Gottman Method gives couples practical tools to manage conflict, repair after arguments and build friendship and trust. Schema therapy helps each partner understand how early life experiences shape the way they react in the relationship today, so you can respond to each other with more understanding and less blame.
Sessions are available in person at my Elsternwick consulting rooms or via telehealth. If you have questions about whether couples therapy is right for you, request a call back for a free 15 minute phone consultation.
