My Approach to Counselling and Coaching

WHAT IS MY APPROACH?

As Your Psychologist, I practice schema therapy and coaching

It’s an approach which sits at the heart of my practice.  It is designed to help you change negative life patterns.

So you can tackle what's holding you back in life, career and relationships.

In schema therapy and coaching, I work together with you to address and modify these deeper life patterns.

WHAT IS SCHEMA THERAPY AND COACHING?

Schema Therapy, which lays at the centre of my work, provides a framework for helping anyone understand themselves in a very profound and comprehensive way that conventional methods cannot.

Once you have identified and understood your schema you will gain a sense of clarity that few people ever achieve. In doing so you will be able to develop a clear and methodical approach to addressing what once felt like somewhat vague and insurmountable challenges.

My approach to schema therapy and coaching combines ideas from various approaches including:

Cognitive behavioural therapy - Focusing on changes in thoughts and behaviours in concrete, current life problems.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) - encourages people to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT develops psychological flexibility and is a form of behavioral therapy that combines mindfulness skills with the practice of self-acceptance.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy - a structured form of psychotherapy used to help individuals process and heal from distressing experiences, particularly those related to trauma.

EXECUTIVE COACHING

My clients present with a range of issues. For clients seeking executive coaching I utilise a range of coaching approaches including schema coaching.

Executive Coaching is often coupled with leadership, personality, and strength-based assessment, and 360 degree feedback.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING

For clients seeking help to manage a range of presenting issues such as anxiety and depression, addiction and relationship issues, I have expertise in a range of approaches that are evidenced based and work!

I don’t use a “one size fits all” approach to psychological treatment.  Clients are treated as the individuals that they are, each requiring at times a specifcially tailored approach.

Generally speaking, there is scope for me to use my therapeutic skills and creativity in adapting aspects of treatment to best suit a client’s personality and situation.

It’s important to keep in mind that the therapeutic alliance (i.e., the client therapist relationship) is the most important thing, not the type of therapy modality used, which is backed up by research. It is also important for the therapist to be flexible with different therapy modalities, rather than to be rigid in one type.

RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING

Conflict cannot always be avoided in relationships because no two people are exactly alike, so learning how to deal with conflict ensures a successful and healthy union. Relationship challenges arise in different ways, and being able to communicate with your partner is an integral part of a healthy relationship. Functional communication leads to better understanding between you and your partner, and understanding is the key to a successful union. Different forms of therapy are available to guide the appropriate relationship therapy approach. This includes:
