TELEHEALTH AND TELEPHONE SESSIONS AVAILABLE

The First Session

First Session

Before you have made contact with me … I know that you have either been to other psychologists that may not have been helpful … Or been thinking a while about approaching a psychologist to help you.

I make a point right from the first point of contact to connect with you … ask you ‘what is happening with you at the moment?’ … find a time that works for you … answer any questions you might.

I will provide information and consent forms to complete prior to the first session.

This is important for a number of reasons.

This ensures you understand that therapy is a confidential engagement and relationship.

In particular, that I treat confidentiality as not only a legal and ethical requirement as a psychologist but critical to ensure that therapy is a safe and secure place.

I also want to ensure you understand that there are limits to confidentiality. I will need to discuss or share your therapy detail if : 1) if you are at risk of harm to yourself or someone else; or 2) if I am legally summons to provide your therapy detail through a courts proceedings.

The first session can be a difficult process for people … particularly if you have not been to a psychologist before.

The first session is your space to tell me … in your own way … what is your life problem … there is no right or wrong way to talk about your life problem … I will ask a few questions to help you in the session and gather information about you … this is important … as it will help us formulate a view of what is driving this life problem for you.

I will also paint a picture of what are future sessions will entail.

I will ask you to complete some intake assessments and surveys before the next session which will be normally scheduled in two weeks from your first session.

What I would like you to think about as you approach the first session is what you would like to get out of the therapy. What would you like to work on?

What do you need me to do to help you?

I am here as a paid professional psychologist. I want your feedback if this isn’t working for you … or you feel that we are not working on the issues you came to me to address. I will not be offended if you give this feedback … in fact … I encourage it and will ask your directly towards the end of the session … what has been helpful for you today … what is one takeout.

Looking forward to working with you.
